A Jubo Dal activist lost his wrist in a brutal machete attack in Chattogram’s Kotwali area yesterday (6 April), triggering tensions and retaliatory violence in the neighbourhood.
The victim, Minhaz Uddin, was attacked in the Bhelua Dighi adjacent area while on his way to appear in court. According to police, a group of assailants launched a sudden assault, hacking him with sharp weapons and severing his hand at the wrist before fleeing the scene.
Critically injured, Minhaz was first taken to Chattogram Medical College Hospital and later transferred to Dhaka as his condition deteriorated.
A case was later filed with Kotwali Police Station by Minhaz’s elder sister, naming four individuals and accusing another four to five unidentified suspects. Police have withheld the identities of the accused in the interest of the investigation.
Deputy Commissioner (South) of Chattogram Metropolitan Police, Hossain Muhammad Kabir Bhuiyan, said the attack stemmed from a dispute over local dominance. He added that police operations to arrest the suspects are ongoing, but no arrests had been made at the time of filing this report.
