A Jahangirnagar University student was found dead at her residence in Savar’s Islamnagar area yesterday (15 March).
The deceased was identified as Sharmin Jahan, 23, a student of the Public Administration department from the university’s 51st batch (2021-22 academic session).
Police are questioning her husband, Fahim Al Hasan, in connection with the incident.
Arafatul Islam, additional superintendent of police (crime, ops and traffic – north) of Dhaka district, said Fahim claimed he had left the house at around 10am and discovered his wife’s bloodied body when he returned in the afternoon.
“We are verifying his statement. We hope to determine the actual cause of death soon,” he added.
Dr Enamul Haque Mia of Enam Medical College Hospital’s emergency department said Sharmin was brought in dead at 4:22pm and had an injury on her head. The hospital authorities later informed police, who took custody of the body.
The body has been sent to Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital in the capital for an autopsy, police said.
JU Proctor Professor AKM Rashidul Alam said, “Such a death of a meritorious student is never desirable. We are stunned and speechless.
“We have requested the police to conduct a proper investigation and ensure exemplary punishment for those responsible,” he said.
