Mozammel Hoque Chowdhury, secretary general of Bangladesh Jatri Kalyan Samity, has filed a general diary (GD) seeking protection for his life, alleging threats from transport operators, owners and labour leaders following reports on overcharging during Eid travel.
He submitted the GD online to Demra Police Station under Dhaka Metropolitan Police today (31 March).
Confirming the matter to The Business Standard, Mozammel alleged that after publishing reports on excess fares during Eid-ul-Fitr and road accidents during the same period, he has been receiving continuous threats from transport owners, workers and other groups.
Mozammel also said that following the release of the road accident report yesterday (30 March), some suspicious individuals began monitoring his movements.
He claimed that unknown persons have been loitering near his office, residence and business premises, and have been inquiring about his and his family members’ whereabouts and activities.
He said he has been working for more than two decades on passenger rights and reducing travel-related suffering as the organisation’s founder.
He further said that during the previous Awami League government, he faced multiple cases and imprisonment due to pressure from transport groups.
Amid the recent developments, he filed the GD seeking protection for his life.
Earlier in the day, he also called for the prime minister’s intervention in an online video message to ensure his safety.
Officer-in-Charge of Demra Police Station Mohammad Tayfur Rahman said they have received the GD application and are investigating the matter.
