A show-cause notice has been issued to Mohammad Alauddin Sikder, the Jamaat-e-Islami-nominated parliamentary candidate for Chattogram-3 (Sandwip), over violations of the electoral code of conduct.
The directive was issued today (28 January) by the Election Inquiry and Judicial Committee.
According to the allegations, Sikder used banners on his campaign vehicle in breach of electoral regulations and installed PVC-printed billboards at several locations, including the Sandwip Municipal Market.
He reportedly set up more than 20 billboards and used 12 loudspeakers for campaign purposes, violating Clause (b) of Rule 7 and Rule 17(1) of the electoral code of conduct.
The complaint was lodged by Md Alamgir Hossain, chief agent of BNP-nominated candidate Mostafa Kamal Pasha, accusing Sikder of disregarding election rules. The complaint was forwarded to the committee through the assistant returning officer of Sandwip.
Following the complaint, the chairman of the 13th National Parliamentary Election Inquiry and Judicial Committee and Joint District and Sessions Judge Md Helal Uddin issued the show-cause notice.
According to the notice, Sikder has been instructed to appear in person at the Sandwip Chawki Court at 11:30am on Saturday (31 January) and submit a written explanation as to why legal action should not be taken against him or why a report with recommendations should not be sent to the Election Commission.
