Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Shafiqur Rahman held separate meetings with Chinese and Japanese election observer delegations at his Bashundhara office today (11 February), as international missions arrived to monitor Bangladesh’s national polls.
A four-member Chinese delegation, led by senior diplomat Chen Wei, met the Jamaat Ameer at 11am. The team will directly observe Bangladesh’s voting process as part of China’s broader strategic, economic and geopolitical engagement with the country, according to a press release.
Earlier at 9am, former Japanese ambassador to Bangladesh and head of the Japanese election observation mission Masato Watanabe led a high-level delegation to meet Shafiqur.

The Japanese mission aims to assess whether the general election is being held in a free, transparent and acceptable manner, while supporting democratic processes, according to a separate press release.
Both delegations expressed hope that Bangladesh would be able to conduct a credible election on 12 February. They also voiced optimism that bilateral relations with Bangladesh would strengthen further through continued cooperation and democratic engagement, the release added.
Jamaat-e-Islami’s Assistant Secretary General and Head of the Central Publicity and Media Department Ahsanul Mahboob Zubair, Foreign Affairs Adviser Mahmudul Hasan, and National Election Management Committee members Saif Uddin Khaled and Mosharraf Hossain Masud were present at the meetings.
