Raja Krishnamoorthi, a candidate for Senate, leaned into the historic nature of his campaign during a stop at Manny’s, a crowded Chicago deli that is a popular campaign stop. If he wins, he said, will be the first immigrant and first Indian-American elected to the role, giving the state a senator who “looks like Illinois.” His remarks were occasionally drowned out by applause for Gov. JB Pritzker, who was greeting supporters 10 feet away and campaigning for Lt. Gov. Juliana Stratton, Krishnamoorthi’s main rival in the Democratic primary.
