Health and Family Welfare Minister Sardar Md Sakhawat Husain has said the health sector was plundered under the previous “fascist” government, leaving upazila health complexes short of funds and basic supplies like gauze, bandages, and syringes.
The minister made the remarks at the parliament today (29 March), while responding to Gaibandha-4 MP Mohammad Shamim Kaiser regarding the upgradation of Gobindaganj Upazila Hospital in Gaibandha district to 100 beds.
The minister stated that widespread plunder and mismanagement by the “fascist” government have left ongoing health projects with no developmental progress.
He noted that during the construction of 250-bed hospitals, poor planning by engineers led to bathrooms being built at entrances, making access practically impossible and creating foul odours.
These hospitals’ infrastructures were hurriedly constructed with the aim of quick revenue generation, he added.
Sakhawat said, “Upazila health complexes lack the funds to purchase basic items such as gauze, bandages, and syringes. The limited funds available during the interim government have also been exhausted.”
He further said he has held two to three discussions with the prime minister regarding the situation.
“Following the upcoming budget, arrangements will be made to gradually provide healthcare services to the public in all upazilas within the constraints of limited resources,” he added.
