The High Court has granted a six-month interim bail to Baul singer Abul Sarkar, who was arrested on charges of hurting religious sentiments and blasphemy.
The bench of Justice Md Atowar Rahman and Justice Md Sagir Hossain passed the order yesterday (5 April) after hearing a bail petition filed on his behalf, the petitioner’s lawyer Gazi Kamrul Islam Sojol confirmed today.
The court also issued a rule asking why he should not be granted permanent bail.
According to the case statements, Abul Sarkar made remarks insulting religion during a pala gaan performance at Khala Pagli’s fair in the Jabra area of Ghior Upazila in Manikganj on 4 November. A video of the remarks later spread on social media, triggering criticism.
On 19 November 2025, a Manikganj Detective Branch team detained him from a musical event in Madaripur. He was brought to the Manikganj district DB office the following morning.
Later that day, Mufti Md Abdullah from Ghior Upazila filed a case against him at Ghior Police Station. He was shown arrested in the case and sent to jail through the Manikganj Senior Judicial Magistrate’s Court.
He later filed a bail petition with the High Court in the case.
