He also rejected comparisons between the latest referendum and the one held during the rule of Ziaur Rahman, saying the two are fundamentally different.

The government will be declared “illegal” if the outcome of the referendum is not respected, Asif Mahmud Shojib Bhuyain, spokesperson of the National Citizen Party (NCP), said today (5 April).
“We will not take any time, just as you have not delayed in dismantling our achievements,” he said while speaking at a press conference at the party’s temporary office in Banglamotor, Dhaka.
Alleging authoritarian tendencies, Asif said, “We have witnessed fascism in the past, and now all the signs of authoritarianism are emerging within the current government.”
He also rejected comparisons between the latest referendum and the one held during the rule of Ziaur Rahman, saying the two are fundamentally different.
“During Ziaur Rahman’s time, the referendum was used to create a king’s party by utilising various state agencies,” he claimed.
In contrast, he said, the recent referendum was aimed at structural reforms of the state, adding that people voted in favour of such changes.
Referring to the ongoing debate surrounding the referendum, he warned of possible street protests.
“The developments surrounding the referendum are pushing us towards taking to the streets. This will not be beneficial for anyone,” he added.
