The government will take fresh initiatives to bring former prime minister Sheikh Hasina back to the country to face the death sentence in a case over crimes against humanity committed during the July Uprising, International Crimes Tribunal Chief Prosecutor Md Aminul Islam said today (4 March).
“We are aware that Sheikh Hasina is currently in India. She has been convicted, and bringing her back is a legal matter that will require due process,” he said while speaking to journalists at the tribunal premises, adding that necessary measures will be taken.
Responding to a question on whether steps were being taken under the new administration to secure her return, Aminul Islam said, “We will take initiatives. We will take appropriate steps to bring her back.”
When asked about the progress of earlier prosecution efforts to repatriate her, the chief prosecutor said he was not yet aware of the latest developments.
After the fall of Awami League government on 5 August 2024, a reconstituted International Crimes Tribunal-1 initiated proceedings against the former prime minister Sheikh Hasina over alleged crimes against humanity during that period.
On 17 November last year, the tribunal sentenced Hasina and former home minister Asaduzzaman Khan to death in the case.
In the same verdict, former inspector general of police Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun, who acted as an approver in the trial, was sentenced to five years’ imprisonment.
