The government has formed a six-member central committee, led by Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Md Asaduzzaman, to facilitate the withdrawal of cases filed for political harassment.
The Cabinet Division issued a gazette notification yesterday (8 March), announcing the formation of the committee titled ‘Central Committee for Taking Measures to Withdraw Politically Motivated Harassment Cases’.
Other members of the committee include the secretary of the Ministry of Home Affairs, the additional secretary or joint secretary of the ministry’s law wing, the officer-in-charge of the Law-1 branch of the home ministry, and a representative from the law ministry not below the rank of joint secretary. The official from Law-1 branch of the home ministry will serve as the member secretary of the committee.
Earlier, on 22 September 2024, the interim government formed two committees under the Public Security Division of the home ministry to recommend the withdrawal of politically motivated harassment cases. One was established at the district level and the other at the ministry level.
At that time, the law adviser headed the ministry-level committee.
According to the Law and Justice Division, as of 8 February, the ministry-level committee formed under the interim government has held 39 meetings and recommended the withdrawal of 23,865 cases.
