Four children drowned after a floating bridge over the Brahmaputra River overturned in Jamalpur’s Dewanganj this afternoon (21 March), reports bdnews24.
Confirming the incident, Jamalpur Fire Service and Civil Defence Senior Station Manager Robiul Islam said, “Five people were rescued, four of whom had died.”
The deceased were identified as Khadija, 12, and her brother Abdul Motaleb, 6, from Jhalurchar area; Mayamoni, 10, from Dakatia Para area; and Abir, 16, from Gamaria area.
According to locals and eyewitnesses, the floating bridge, constructed with drums, had been set up to allow people to travel to nearby river islands and for recreational visits.
On Eid day, a large number of visitors gathered on the bridge.

Fire Service personnel later conducted a search operation and rescued five people in unconscious condition before taking them to Dewanganj Upazila Health Complex, where doctors declared four of them dead on arrival.
Jamalpur-1 lawmaker and State Minister for Civil Aviation and Tourism M Rashiduzzaman Millat visited the site following the incident.
