Former state minister for civil aviation and tourism Md Mahbub Ali has been shown arrested in an attempted murder case filed over incidents linked to the July Uprising in Dhaka’s Mirpur area.
The order was issued today (9 April) by Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Ariful Islam after investigation officer of the case and sub-inspector of Mirpur Model Police Station Md Shahjalal Mia filed a petition seeking to show him arrested in this case.
Md Mahbub Ali was brought to court from jail for the hearing.
The court accepted the petition and ordered that he be sent to jail, confirmed Public Prosecutor Muhammad Shamsuddoha Sumon.
In the petition, police stated that evidence has been found linking the accused to the incident. It alleged that he played a leading role in suppressing the July Uprising. For the sake of a proper investigation, it was necessary to show him arrested in the case. Police also noted that the investigation is ongoing and that a remand application may be filed later for further questioning.
Mahbub Ali was earlier arrested on 15 September 2024, from the Segunbagicha area of Dhaka and has remained in custody since then.
According to the case statement, on 19 July 2024, ninth-grade student Adham Bin Amin was participating in a protest at Mirpur-10 demanding quota reforms. During the protest, police and activists of the Awami League allegedly opened fire, leaving him shot in both knees. Following the incident, his brother Akibun Noor filed the attempted murder case on 22 October the same year.
