The president of the transport workers’ union and former convener of the Rupsa upazila unit of Sramik Dal, Masum Billah, was hacked and shot dead in front of the Bata store at Dakbangla intersection in Khulna city around 9pm yesterday (4 March).
Locals took him to Khulna Medical College Hospital where the on-duty doctor declared him dead, Khulna Sadar Police Station OC Md Kabir Hossain confirmed.
He said Masum Billah was first hacked and then shot dead at Dakbangla intersection in the city, while one suspect was detained with a weapon with help from locals.
“Drives have been launched to arrest the others through interrogation of the detainee,” Kabir added.
The deceased was the son of the late Minhaj Uddin Munshi of Bagmara village in Rupsa upazila, Khulna.
He had served as president of the Rupsa Motor Workers’ Union and former convener of the Rupsa upazila unit of Sramik Dal and was also a businessman.
