The residence of Dipali Khatun in Faridpur’s Charbhadrasan is in mourning after her death in a missile strike in Lebanon, with her body now in a Beirut morgue awaiting repatriation to Bangladesh.
Dipali, 34, from Char Shalepur village under Char Harirampur union, was killed on Wednesday (8 April) in Beirut’s Hamra area when a missile hit the residence where she was staying with her employer’s family.
Members of the employer’s family were also reported killed.
The incident has been confirmed by her relatives, district administration sources in Bangladesh, and the Bangladesh embassy in Beirut.
Dipali had travelled to Lebanon in 2015 for work and had since been living there.
She last returned home in 2023 and went back again in early 2024.
Her mother died in a lightning strike three to four years ago, and she is survived by her father Sheikh Mofazzel, three sisters, and two brothers.
Her younger sister, Laizu Khatun, said the family last spoke to Dipali at around 4pm Bangladesh time on Wednesday.
After that, her phone became unreachable. Later, at 1:37am, Laiju received a WhatsApp call informing her of her sister’s death.
Dipali worked in a household in Lebanon and used to send money home through a nearby shop, according to family members.
Since the news reached the village on Thursday (9 April), the family has been in mourning.
Her elderly father has reportedly been losing consciousness repeatedly after hearing of her death.
Her family members and local residents have urged the government to take swift steps to bring her body back to Bangladesh.
The local union parishad panel chairman, Billal Hossain, said authorities visited the family after learning of the incident and have contacted the upazila administration.
Charbhadrasan Upazila Nirbahi Officer Suraiya Momtaz said officials are maintaining communication with the family and have requested documents to arrange the return of the body.
