Former social welfare minister Nuruzzaman Ahmed has been shown arrested in a case filed over the killing of a man named Zubaid Islam in the capital’s Jatrabari area during the July Uprising.
The order was issued today (13 April) by the court of Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Sarah Farzana Haque following a petition from the police, Prosecutor Shamsuddoha Sumon said.
According to the petition seeking to show him arrested, Zubaid joined a protest in the Shonir Akhra area on 20 July 2024. Around 7pm, he was shot and killed.
A case over the killing was filed at Jatrabari Police Station on 23 February this year.
During the investigation, Nuruzzaman was identified as a suspect, and preliminary evidence of his involvement in the incident has been found, the petition said. For the sake of a fair and proper investigation, it was deemed necessary to show him arrested in this case.
It is to be noted that on 30 January 2025, police arrested Nuruzzaman Ahmed at his younger brother Waheduzzaman’s house in Rangpur city. Since then, he has been in jail.
