A Dhaka court has placed former director general of the Directorate General of Forces Intelligence (DGFI), Lt Gen (retd) Sheikh Mamun Khaled, on a fresh three-day remand in connection with a murder case filed over the killing of a BNP activist.
Dhaka Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Awlad Hossain Muhammad Junaid passed the order today (9 April) following a hearing, confirmed state prosecutor Muhammad Shamsuddoha Sumon.
Police produced the accused before the court after completion of a previous 14-day remand in three phases and sought a further seven-day remand for interrogation in the case filed with Paltan Model Police Station over the killing of BNP activist Mokbul Hossain.
According to the remand petition submitted by Sub-Inspector Md Tofazzal Hossain of the DB Motijheel Division’s Special Operations Team, the accused had allegedly assisted the then Awami League government in suppressing political opponents and played a behind-the-scenes role in the incident.
Investigators said preliminary findings and information from various sources indicate his involvement in what they described as a “political killing”.
The investigation is ongoing, and further custodial interrogation is necessary to gather more evidence, the petition added.
During the hearing, defence lawyers sought cancellation of the remand and filed a bail petition, which was opposed by the prosecution. After hearing both sides, the court granted a three-day remand.
Earlier, the Detective Branch (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police arrested Mamun Khaled from his residence in Mirpur DOHS on 25 March. The court subsequently granted a five-day remand on 26 March, followed by another six-day remand on 31 March and a further three-day remand on 6 April.
According to the case statement, the incident dates back to 10 December 2022, when BNP announced a one-point movement demanding the fall of the then government. On that day, attacks and vandalism were carried out at the party’s Naya Paltan office, while thousands of leaders and activists gathered nearby also came under attack. Mokbul Hossain was shot during the incident and later died.
The case was filed on 30 September last by Mahfuzur Rahman, naming 256 accused, including former prime minister Sheikh Hasina.
