Liberation war affairs minister Ahmed Azam Khan has warned that equating the July uprising with Bangladesh’s independence would lead to a ‘major disaster’.
“The independence of Bangladesh came only once; there was nothing before or after like it,” the minister said while speaking at a reception for freedom fighters organised by Dhaka South City Corporation yesterday (28 March).
He acknowledged that political milestones such as the 1990 mass uprising in Bangladesh and the recent student-led protests hold significant importance.
However, he stressed that these events should not be considered equivalent to the country’s independence.
“We respect and honour these political achievements in an independent country. But if we place them on the same level as independence, it will be a major disaster for us,” he added.
According to the minister, the Liberation War remains the foundation of the nation and its defining moment in history.
He also highlighted key challenges facing his ministry, including preparing an accurate list of martyred freedom fighters and verifying the records of those who opposed the Liberation War, such as members of the Razakar, Al-Badr, and Al-Shams forces.
Administrator of Dhaka South City Corporation, Md Abdus Salam, also spoke at the event.
