At least eight people were killed and 24 others injured in separate road accidents across six districts in Bangladesh today (21 March), reports Prothom Alo.
The incidents occurred between morning and late afternoon, with two deaths reported in Mymensingh; two in Chattogram’s Patiya and Mirsharai; and one each in Narail, Chuadanga, Faridpur and Madaripur.
In Tarakanda, Mymensingh, a collision between a CNG-powered auto-rickshaw and a motorcycle near Shimulia Bhandari’s corner on the Shyamnagar–Mymensingh road left two people dead and three injured.
Shyamnagar Highway Police Station Officer-in-Charge Aminul Islam confirmed the matter.
The deceased were identified as Rubel Mia, 20, and Riti Akter, 8.
The injured were taken to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital.
“Police have impounded the vehicles involved,” OC Aminul said.
In Patiya, a passenger bus overturned after hitting a road divider on the Chattogram–Cox’s Bazar bypass around 12:30pm, said Kumira Highway Police Station Officer-in-Charge Zakir Rabbani.
One passenger, aged around 35, was killed, while at least 18 others were injured.
The injured were first taken to Patiya Upazila Health Complex, with four later transferred to Chattogram Medical College Hospital, the OC said.
Highway Police Inspector Mostafizur Rahman said the bus swerved onto the road divider while trying to avoid a pedestrian, causing it to overturn.
In Mirsharai, a private car lost control in Wahedpur union’s Hadi Fakirhat area on the Dhaka–Chattogram highway, killing its driver, Enamul Haque of Chauddagram, Cumilla.
In Narail Sadar, a motorcycle accident occurred around 3pm in the Dhonda Kazipara Mosque area on the Magura–Narail regional highway.
Officer-in-Charge Oli Mia confirmed the incident, adding that legal action is underway.
The crash left Rabby Molla, 20, of Raghunathpur dead, while another passenger was critically injured.
In Chuadanga Sadar, two young men riding a motorcycle lost control near Ghoramara on the Chuadanga–Kushtia highway around noon.
Suruj Ali, 19, of Islampara, died before reaching the hospital, while the rider, Hridoy Hossain, 18, sustained injuries, said Officer-in-Charge Mizanur Rahman.
In Alfadanga, Faridpur, a 16-year-old boy, Jihad Sheikh, died in a motorcycle accident on the Arazi Bana road at around 1:30pm. His cousin, Roni Mia, 17, sustained injuries.
Officer-in-Charge Md Hasnat of Alfadanga Police Station said the accident was caused by slippery road conditions due to rain.
In Shibchar, Madaripur, a schoolboy, Shahadat Khalifa, 15, died after being thrown from a van following a collision with a motorcycle on the expressway near the Kutubpur boundary around 3pm.
Police said the injured from the accidents were taken to nearby hospitals, and the vehicles involved were seized.
