Eid shopping has started gaining momentum at markets and shopping centres in the upazila and district towns ahead of the upcoming Eid-ul-Fitr.
A large number of shoppers were seen visiting markets and traditional shops with enthusiasm.
The rush in the markets has increased as government employees and officials of autonomous bodies received their salaries and festival allowances.
The evening remains the peak shopping period, with a large number of customers visiting Salimar Super Market, Islam Plaza, Tarafdar Mansion, Quazi Tower, Poura Market, Shapla Market, Station Road and Elicha Market in the district town.
Many markets have been decorated, with some entrances illuminated with colourful lights.
Sarees are in high demand among female customers, while Punjabi and Fatua are popular among male buyers.
Besides, three-piece is popular among young girls, while jeans, trousers, fashionable shoes and short punjabis are being sold for children.
A number of makeshift shops have also been set up on pavements where middle- and low-income people are seen shopping at relatively lower prices.
Law enforcement agencies have taken adequate measures to maintain law and order in the town, particularly in markets, to ensure the safety of shopkeepers and customers.
Superintendent of Police Md Jashim Uddin said the district police administration has taken necessary steps to ensure the smooth movement of people in the town.
Special teams of the elite force RAB and police are also patrolling the town round the clock to maintain security, he added.
