The Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) has directed shop owners and business establishments across the capital to remove any materials, equipment, or extensions encroaching on footpaths by 31 March to ensure pedestrian safety and smooth traffic flow.
The directive, issued today (23 March) through a public notice signed by DMP acting commissioner Md Sarwar, warns that legal action will be taken against non-compliant establishments from 1 April.
According to the notice, in many areas of the city, shops and commercial establishments often operate beyond their premises by illegally extending onto footpaths and roads.
Such practices not only obstruct pedestrians but also force them onto the streets, creating safety hazards and contributing to traffic congestion, the notice said.
In response, authorities have urged all shop owners, workshop operators, and business establishments across Dhaka to immediately remove goods and equipment from footpaths and roads in the public interest.
The notice further said that from 1 April, mobile courts led by DMP’s special metropolitan magistrates and executive magistrates will conduct summary trials against violators.
Penalties may include fines, imprisonment, and confiscation of goods, the notice added.
