The Traffic Division of Dhaka Metropolitan Police has issued a set of guidelines for public transport owners, workers, passengers and pedestrians to ensure safe and smooth journeys during the upcoming Eid-ul-Adha holidays.
In a public notice for city residents, the DMP said a large number of people are expected to leave Dhaka for their hometowns during the holidays, prompting special traffic management measures at bus terminals and major roads.
Bus operators have been asked to maintain scheduled departures, avoid overcharging passengers, prevent harassment, and ensure that the same seat is not sold to multiple passengers.
The DMP also instructed transport workers not to carry passengers on bus rooftops or in goods and livestock vehicles, especially on return trips carrying sacrificial animals.
Drivers have been asked to maintain speed limits, avoid reckless driving and illegal overtaking, and refrain from driving while intoxicated, ill or drowsy.
Vehicles without valid documents and drivers without valid licences will not be allowed to operate.
Drivers have also been barred from using mobile phones or earphones while driving, while loud music inside vehicles has been discouraged.
The DMP instructed transport owners to verify drivers’ licences before hiring them and not to force drivers to drive for more than five consecutive hours or eight hours a day.
Passengers have been advised to board buses only from designated terminals and counters, avoid accepting food or drinks from strangers, keep their belongings under their own supervision, and reach terminals before departure time.
Pedestrians have been asked to use zebra crossings, footbridges and underpasses while crossing roads and avoid using mobile phones while walking or crossing streets.
In case of emergencies, passengers and commuters have been asked to contact terminal police control rooms or the national emergency service hotline 999.
The DMP sought cooperation from all city residents to make this year’s Eid journey safe, orderly and hassle-free.
