The Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) has launched a month-long special cleanliness drive and “crash programme” in response to the recent rise in mosquito infestation.
The programme was inaugurated today (1 March) in wards 71 and 72 under DSCC.
Speaking as the chief guest at the inauguration, DSCC Administrator Md Abdus Salam said, “From today, we have begun a month-long special cleanliness and crash programme to control mosquitoes. To ensure transparency, a four-tier monitoring system has been put in place, at the ward level, senior official level, chief executive officer/secretary level, and administrator level.”
The administrator said that out of 75 wards, 10 have been identified as high-risk considering mosquito prevalence.
He warned that mobile courts would be conducted if privately owned ponds are not properly maintained. “If citizens fail to remain aware and destroy mosquito breeding grounds, mobile courts will be operated through area-based executive magistrates.”
Salam urged citizens to remain vigilant, adding that no initiative can succeed without public cooperation. He also stressed the need to realise the prime minister’s vision of a “Clean City, Green City.”
The administrator further said that local imams would be engaged to raise public awareness, alongside microphone announcements.
He also called upon local members of parliament and political leaders to take part in the service-oriented initiative.
The drive, which began at 9am, involved around 250 workers from DSCC’s waste management and health departments.
They cleaned canals, drains, sewers and footpaths, and applied mosquito control chemicals.
