Dhaka and Delhi have agreed that the arrested individuals linked to the killing of Sharif Osman Hadi, spokesperson of Inqilab Mancha, would be returned to Bangladesh in line with the existing extradition treaty.
The issue was raised by Foreign Minister Khalilur Rahman in meetings with India’s External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar and Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Hardeep Singh Puri, accirding to a statement issued by the Bangladesh foreign ministry.
Khalilur also thanked the Indian government for apprehending the suspects in Hadi’s murder in December last year.
Earlier in March, Bangladesh sought consular access to the two main suspects in the murder.
The diplomatic move by the Deputy High Commission follows the Kolkata Police conveying to the mission about the arrest of Faisal Karim Masud, 37, and Alamgir Hossain, 34, as the suspects.
Besides, the Special Task Force (STF) of West Bengal Police arrested Bangladeshi broker Philip Sangma, who is accused of helping these two key suspects flee the country.
On 12 December at around 2:20pm, assailants on a motorcycle opened fire on Hadi, leaving him critically injured with gunshot wounds to the head and below the right ear.
He was initially taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital and later shifted to Evercare Hospital, Dhaka. As his condition worsened, he was flown to Singapore by air ambulance on 15 December for advanced treatment. He died there on 18 December, about a week later, while undergoing treatment.
Following the shooting, a case was filed with the Paltan Police Station on 14 December on charges of attempted murder, which was later converted into a murder case after Hadi’s death.
Later, Dhaka Metropolitan Police said Faisal and Alamgir fled the country with the help of Sangma through the Mymensingh’s Haluaghat border. However, the Indian police rejected the claim at the time.
