A man was beaten to death and his brother injured after being accused of theft in Fatikchhari upazila in Chattogram, police said.
One suspect has been arrested in connection with the incident.
The incident took place around 4pm yesterday (4 April) in the Khandokar Para area of Dantmara union under Vujpur Police Station.
The deceased was identified as Md Nurul Absar, and the injured as Md Russell. They are sons of local resident Nabidur Rahman.
Speaking to The Business Standard, Vujpur Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Bipul Chandra De said the two brothers were summoned over allegations of theft and subjected to a village arbitration.
“At one point, a group of people allegedly assaulted them severely on suspicion of being thieves. It is alleged that they were subjected to brutal and inhumane torture,” the officer said.
The brothers were later rescued and taken to Nazirhat Upazila Health Complex, where doctors declared Absar dead, he added. Russell is currently undergoing treatment.
OC Bipul also said they responded after receiving a call through the national emergency hotline 999 and rescued the brothers from the scene. Other family members present were also taken to safety.
In connection with the incident, the victim’s elder brother, Abdul Hamid, filed a murder case with Vujpur Police Station, naming 14 individuals as accused. The body has been sent to Chattogram Medical College Hospital morgue for an autopsy.
“If there are allegations of theft, law enforcement agencies are there to investigate and ensure justice. Beating someone to death in this manner is completely illegal,” the OC said.
He added that one suspect, Md Salauddin, 32, has been arrested, and drives are underway to apprehend the remaining accused.
