The Chattogram City Corporation (CCC) has discontinued door-to-door waste collection by private vendors, bringing the service fully under its own management and eliminating collection fees for residents from April.
The decision, implemented in March following instructions from Mayor Shahadat Hossain, means conservancy workers of the city corporation are now directly collecting household waste across the city, according to a statement issued yesterday (9 April) by CCC Secretary Mohammad Ashraful Amin.
Under the new system, no third party is authorised to collect money from residents for waste disposal services.
Despite the directive, the city authority said it has received complaints that some individuals are still attempting to collect money by posing as vendors.
Describing such activities as illegal, the CCC urged residents to remain cautious and avoid making payments to unauthorised persons.
“If anyone tries to collect money through coercion or fraud, citizens should immediately inform the city corporation,” the statement said, adding that strict legal action will be taken against those involved.
Residents have been requested to report such incidents to the deputy chief conservancy officer or the mayor’s personal assistant via mobile phone.
The CCC also called for public cooperation in maintaining cleanliness, urging residents to avoid indiscriminate dumping of waste to help build a clean, green, healthy and safe city.
