Police used batons, sound grenades, water cannons and tear gas this afternoon (6 February) to disperse supporters of Inqilab Mancha who attempted to march towards the chief adviser’s residence, demanding justice for the killing of their spokesperson Sharif Osman Hadi.
Eyewitnesses said Inqilab Mancha leaders and activists gathered near the InterContinental Dhaka in the capital’s Ramna after Juma prayers and attempted to march towards the chief adviser’s residence, State Guest House Jamuna. Police blocked their advance with a barricade near the InterContinental Hotel.
When protesters tried to remove the barricade, police charged with batons and fired sound grenades and tear gas, while deploying water cannons to scatter the crowd. Protesters responded by hurling bricks at police, triggering a tense standoff.
At the time of filing this report, clashes were continuing in the area, with law enforcers maintaining a heavy presence.
