The death toll from a blast, apparently from a gas leak, in Halishahar of Chattogram has risen to five with the death of another victim.
The deceased, Md Shakhawat Hossain, 49, died at 10:40am today (25 February) while undergoing treatment at the National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery.
Assistant Professor Dr Shawon Bin Rahman, a resident physician at the institute, said Shakhawat had sustained 100% burns with inhalation injury.
Earlier, Ashura Akter Pakhi, Nurjahan Akter, her son Shawon and brother-in-law Sumon, who had suffered injuries in the blast, died.
Four other victims are being treated at the institute, with doctors saying their condition remains critical.
Earlier, a fire broke out at their house in Halishahar from accumulated gas, leaving nine members of the same family injured on Monday (23 February) night.
The victims were initially admitted to a local hospital and later transferred to Dhaka for advanced treatment.
Two separate probe bodies have been formed over the blast incident.
Mohammad Jashim Uddin, deputy director of Chattogram Fire Service and Civil Defence, said a five-member committee has been formed to look into the explosion.
Meanwhile, Kabir Uddin Ahmed, general manager of Karnaphuli Gas Distribution Company Limited, formed a three-member committee to probe the blast.
