A verdict will be delivered today (26 January) in a crimes against humanity case over the killing of six people in police firing in Dhaka’s Chankharpul, shortly before former prime minister Sheikh Hasina fled the country on 5 August 2024 amid the July Uprising.
The verdict will be announced by Tribunal-1 of the reconstituted International Crimes Tribunal and will be broadcast live on Bangladesh Television (BTV).
This will be the second verdict by the restructured ICT. The case involves eight police officers, including former Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) commissioner Habibur Rahman.
Of the eight accused, four are currently under arrest, while the remaining four are absconding.
Those in custody are former Shahbagh Police Station inspector Md Arshad Hossain, constables Md Sujan Mia, Md Imaj Hossain Imon, and Md Nasirul Islam.
The absconding accused are former DMP commissioner Habibur Rahman; former DMP additional commissioner Sudip Kumar Chakraborty; former DMP Ramna Division additional deputy commissioner Shah Alam Md Akhtarul Islam; and former Ramna Division assistant commissioner Mohammad Imrul.
The tribunal had earlier fixed 20 January for delivery of the verdict, but deferred it as the judgment was not ready, rescheduling it for today.
Prosecutor Gazi MH Tamim informed journalists that the verdict announcement will be aired live on BTV.
Following the conclusion of arguments from both the prosecution and the defence, the tribunal on 24 December last year kept the case under consideration for judgment against all eight accused.
Earlier, on 14 July 2025, ICT-1 framed charges against eight accused in connection with the killings.
The prosecution filed the formal charge against all eight accused on 25 May, marking the first formal charges filed at the ICT in cases arising from the uprising.
The six victims, Shahriar Khan Anas, Sheikh Mahdi Hasan Zunayed, Md Yakub, Md Rakib Hawlader, Md Ismamul Haque, and Manik Miah, were killed in Chankharpul on 5 August 2024.
The tribunal’s investigation agency submitted a 90-page probe report on 20 April 2025.
