A BNP lawmaker has called for officially recognising Prime Minister Tarique Rahman and his late brother Arafat Rahman as ‘child freedom fighters,’ and also sought freedom fighter status for former prime minister Khaleda Zia.
The demand was made by Gazipur-1 MP Mujibur Rahman during a discussion on the motion of thanks on the President’s address in parliament today (8 April).
Speaking in parliament, he described Tarique Rahman as a symbol of struggle and resilience.
He said the slogan ‘Bangladesh first,’ attributed to the prime minister, has inspired people in his constituency.
The BNP lawmaker also stated that during the Liberation War, Khaleda Zia and her family were detained by Pakistani forces and claimed that Tarique Rahman had also spent nine months in confinement during that time.
On that basis, he urged the government to recognise Khaleda Zia as a freedom fighter and to grant “child freedom fighter” status to both her sons.
He added that the proposal was not intended to please the prime minister but was based on his personal conviction.
