The BNP has completed all preparations for a major public meeting at Chattogram’s historic Polo Ground, ahead of party chairman Tarique Rahman’s scheduled arrival in the port city after nearly two decades.
A stringent, multi-layered security arrangement has been put in place across the Chattogram metropolitan area for the event, slated for tomorrow.
Tarique Rahman is expected to reach the city tonight.
During a visit to inspect preparations at the Polo Ground this afternoon (24 January), Chattogram city Mayor and BNP leader Dr Shahadat Hossain said the rally would be “a movement to realise the people’s rights.”

Tight security in place
As part of security measures, Chattogram Metropolitan Police (CMP) Commissioner Hasib Aziz has imposed a series of restrictions through a public notice. Drone flights have been completely banned across the metropolitan area on 24 and 25 January. Carrying firearms, sharp weapons, sticks, explosives, bricks or stones has also been prohibited, alongside strict curbs on displaying or promoting anything deemed a threat to state security.
CMP officials said a three-tier security system will be in place at and around the venue, including the stage. In addition to uniformed personnel, a significant number of officers in plainclothes will be deployed.
According to the officers, the entire area will be swept by a dog squad once the stage is fully set.
Providing an update on overall security, CMP Assistant Commissioner (Media) Aminur Rashid said, “Around 2,500 to 3,000 members of law enforcement agencies will be deployed for the meeting. Security has already been strengthened across the city, and we are working with full force to ensure there is no untoward incident.”
