Shafiqur Rahman further said while the Constitution recognises the people as the ultimate source of power, their opinion is being ignored in practice. He alleged that despite strong public support for a referendum, it is not being taken forward.

Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Shafiqur Rahman today (3 April) alleged that the BNP changed its position on the referendum after securing a two-thirds majority in parliament, creating a political crisis.
“Although the BNP had proposed the referendum, it changed its stance overnight after gaining a two-thirds majority. This shows a failure to fulfil its responsibility, and it has created a crisis,” he said, accusing the party of breaking its promises to the people.
He made the remarks while speaking as the chief guest at a rally organised by Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Dhaka district in South Keraniganj.
Shafiqur Rahman further said while the Constitution recognises the people as the ultimate source of power, their opinion is being ignored in practice. He alleged that despite strong public support for a referendum, it is not being taken forward.
Addressing the ongoing energy situation, he claimed the government is concealing the real situation. Referring to long queues at petrol pumps, he alleged that an artificial crisis has been created in the fuel market, with fuel being sold at higher prices.
He called on the government to hold open discussions with all political parties to address the situation.
Criticising the appointment of administrators in local government bodies, he said such moves undermine elected representatives and questioned the ethics of appointing defeated candidates to key positions.
On education, Shafiqur Rahman expressed concern over the introduction of home-based classes, saying excessive device use could lead to increased dependency among children and harm their intellectual development.
He also announced that field-level programmes of an 11-party alliance will begin from Saturday (4 April), adding that the movement will continue in a “constitutional and disciplined manner” until people’s rights are ensured.
