The Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) accorded a reception to ministers, state ministers, advisers and members of parliament elected from the garment industry in the 13th national parliamentary election, urging them to raise sector-specific issues in parliament.
The reception was held at the Army Golf Club in the capital today (26 February), where 17 elected representatives from the apparel industry were honoured.
Speaking at the event, BGMEA President Mahmud Hasan Khan called on the newly elected lawmakers to voice the concerns of the country’s readymade garment (RMG) sector alongside national and constituency issues.
“Those of you who have been elected to the National Parliament from our industry, as you will speak about the problems and development of your respective constituencies and national issues, at the same time, you should also speak about this industry,” he said.
He added that the industry is facing ongoing challenges and urged the representatives to highlight those issues in parliament.
The 17 honourees included Industries, Commerce, and Textiles and Jute Minister Khandaker Abdul Muktadir; Civil Aviation and Tourism Minister Afroza Khanam Rita; Housing and Public Works Minister Zakaria Taher (Sumon); State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shama Obaed Islam; State Minister for Textiles and Jute Md Shariful Alam; State Minister for Housing and Public Works Ahammed Sohel Manjur; and Prime Minister’s Adviser Mahdi Amin.
The members of parliament honoured at the function were Zainul Abedin Farroque, Ershad Ullah, SM Faisal, Khaled Hossain Mahbub, Md Abul Kalam, Lutfur Rahman, Mohammad Zakir Hossain, Md Abdullah, Md Abdul Hannan and Md Shahadat Hossain.
