Border Guard Bangladesh’s Jessore Battalion (49 BGB) has arrested an Indian national, Sujauddin (52), and seized diamonds and foreign currencies valued at approximately Tk6.62 crore during a special operation in the Notunhat area on the Jessore-Jhikargacha highway.
Acting on a tip-off, the 49 BGB conducted the operation on a paved road near Notunhat on 2 April 2026.
BGB personnel apprehended Sujauddin with 155.76 grams of diamonds, valued at an estimated Tk6,61,39,590.
During initial questioning, Sujauddin, son of Abu Bakkar from Tamil Nadu, India, claimed he collected the diamonds from smugglers in Dhaka and was transporting them to Benapole for delivery to an unidentified recipient in Kolkata.
He further stated that he had travelled several times in the past month to Thailand, Malaysia, Bangladesh, and India.
A representative from Diamond World in Jessore, in the presence of police, preliminarily identified the recovered diamonds as genuine.
The BGB also confiscated Tk5,530 in cash, 5,880 Indian rupees, US$550, 200 Thai baht, a mobile phone, and a digital watch from the suspect.
The total value of the seizure, including diamonds and foreign currencies, amounted to Tk6,62,65,161.
Legal proceedings are ongoing against the detained Indian national, who will be handed over to Jessore Kotwali Model Police Station. The process to deposit the seized diamonds and currencies with the Jessore treasury is underway.
Jessore Battalion Commanding Officer Lieutenant Colonel Golam Mohammad Saiful Alam Khan said the battalion remains vigilant in preventing all forms of smuggling, including drugs, gold, and diamonds, in line with the Border Guard Bangladesh director general’s “zero tolerance” policy.
He affirmed that the BGB is firmly committed to border security and combating smuggling.
