A Bangladeshi woman was brutally beaten to death with a hammer at a convenience store in Fort Myers, Florida.
The victim has been identified as Yasmin, a Bangladeshi expatriate living in Fort Myers.
The attacker has been arrested by police.
According to police and emergency services, the incident occurred around 7:14am yesterday (2 April) at the D&D Convenience Store.
Responding quickly, Fort Myers Fire Department and Lee County EMS rescued Yasmin, who had sustained severe injuries.
She was pronounced dead at 7:27am in front of the store.
Preliminary investigations indicate that a man with a history of mental illness entered the store armed with a hammer and attacked the female employee.
Before the assault, he vandalized a vehicle parked outside.
CCTV footage shows the suspect wearing a yellow graphic T-shirt, black shorts, yellow or orange sneakers, and carrying a backpack.
The video shows him striking the vehicle multiple times.
When Yasmin stepped outside to confront him, he attacked her, striking her in the head repeatedly, causing her to collapse before fleeing the scene.
Police launched a large-scale search with K-9 units and the Lee County Sheriff’s Aviation Unit.
Three nearby schools were placed on lockdown as a precaution.
Although the attacker initially escaped, he was later identified and arrested by the Fort Myers Police Department in the afternoon.
Authorities indicated the attacker may be connected to an unsolved homicide on Hough Street several months ago.
The investigation is ongoing, police said.
They urged residents to remain vigilant.
Yasmin hailed from Kushakhali Union (No 18) in Chandraganj upazila, Lakshmipur district, Bangladesh.
Her death has affected Bangladeshi expatriates across Florida and the United States.
