Jamaat-e-Islami has criticised the government’s decision to remove Ahsan H Mansur from his post as governor of the central bank, describing the manner of his departure as a public insult to a respected figure.
On Wednesday, the government appointed Md Mostaqur Rahman as the new governor of Bangladesh Bank for a four-year term after removing Mansur.
Yesterday, in a Facebook post on the Jamaat ameer’s verified page, Shafiqur Rahman said, “No one has the right to insult respected figures such as the governor of Bangladesh Bank and his advisers in this manner.”
He claimed that the situation at the central bank on Wednesday appears to mark the start of government-supported mob culture, calling it deeply unfortunate and unacceptable.
“The country’s economy is already in dire straits, with an epidemic of corruption at all levels, along with extortion and syndicates; in addition, if such undesirable activities continue at the highest level of the state, such as Bangladesh Bank, the rest of the country’s economy will also be destroyed,” he feared in the post.
Referring to media reports that competent, patriotic, and qualified officials in state institutions are being targeted, he said, “I believe that all segments of society, irrespective of political affiliation, should protest against this disorder.”
Shafiqur demanded that misdeeds be stopped soon and that key government appointments be made based on merit, patriotism, and competence rather than party loyalty.
Meanwhile, NCP Convener Nahid Islam also sharply criticised the appointment of the new governor, calling the process “shameless and undemocratic.”
Speaking at a discussion in Dhaka yesterday, he said, “The governor was removed through mob pressure to install a loan-defaulter businessman, undermining the aspirations of the July Uprising.”
