Advocate Ahmed Azam Khan, vice chairman of the BNP, has been sworn in as a minister of the cabinet.
President Mohammed Shahabuddin administered the oath of office today (12 March).
Ahmed Azam Khan is currently serving as a member of parliament representing the Tangail-8 constituency.
His induction into the cabinet is expected to be followed by an assignment to a portfolio to begin his state duties in the current administration.
However, earlier this noon, Hafiz Uddin Ahmed was elected the speaker of parliament and Barrister Kayser Kamal as the deputy speaker. The new speaker and deputy speaker took their oaths administered by President Mohammad Shahabuddin.
Prior to his appointment as the speaker, Hafiz Uddin Ahmed was serving as the Liberation War Affairs minister but resigned from the post yesterday (11 March), confirmed Md Akbar Hossain, assistant private secretary to the minister.
A six-term lawmaker, Hafiz was first elected to parliament in 1986 from Bhola and was re-elected in 1988. He later won the fifth parliamentary election as an independent candidate.
