Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has appointed new cabinet member Ahmed Azam Khan as the minister for Liberation War affairs, while expanding the responsibilities of Mir Mohammad Helal Uddin by assigning him the role of state minister for land in addition to his current duties.
The Cabinet Division issued a gazette notification yesterday (12 March) stating that the responsibilities of several ministers and state ministers had been reassigned in line with the Rules of Business.
The post of Liberation War affairs minister became vacant after Major (Retd.) Hafiz Uddin Ahmed resigned from the cabinet and took the oath as speaker of parliament yesterday.
Following his resignation, Cabinet Secretary Nasimul Ghani announced Ahmed Azam Khan as a new member of the cabinet.
Later, President Mohammed Shahabuddin administered the oath of office to Khan at the presidential office inside the Jatiya Sangsad complex.
Ahmed Azam Khan was elected a member of parliament from the Tangail-8 (Basail–Sakhipur) constituency in the 13th parliamentary election. He is also a vice-chairman of the BNP’s central committee and previously worked professionally as a lawyer.
According to the notification issued later in the evening, Khan has been assigned the charge of the Ministry of Liberation War Affairs.
Meanwhile, Barrister Kayser Kamal resigned from the post of state minister for land and took the oath as deputy speaker of parliament yesterday.
Following his resignation, the government reassigned the land ministry responsibility to Mir Mohammad Helal Uddin, who currently serves as the state minister for Chittagong Hill Tracts affairs.
Under the new reshuffle, Helal Uddin will simultaneously serve as state minister for land while continuing his responsibilities at the Ministry of Chittagong Hill Tracts Affairs, the notification added.
