Hasibur Rashid, the former vice-chancellor of Begum Rokeya University, Rangpur sentenced in a crimes against humanity case over the killing of Abu Sayed during the July Uprising, was produced before the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) today (17 May).
He was brought to the tribunal at around 12:30pm. Police had arrested Hasibur at a house on Salimullah Road in Mohammadpur on Friday night (15 May).
The former VC was scheduled to be produced before the judicial panel of Tribunal-2 led by Justice Nazrul Islam Chowdhury. The prosecution is expected to seek an order to send him to jail.
Earlier, on 9 April, Tribunal-2 sentenced 28 people to different prison terms in the crimes against humanity case over the killing of Abu Sayed.
Hasibur Rashid, the main accused in the case, was sentenced to 10 years in prison.
He had been absconding since the fall of Sheikh Hasina’s government on 5 August 2024.
Local leaders and activists of the Jatiyotabadi Chhatra Dal detained him on Salimullah Road before police took him into custody.
