The High Court today (12 May) granted six months’ interim bail to former chief justice ABM Khairul Haque in two separate cases filed with Jatrabari and Adabor police stations over incidents linked to the July movement, with his lawyers saying there is now no legal obstacle to his release from jail.
The order was passed by a High Court bench comprising Justice KM Zahid Sarwar Kajol and Justice Sheikh Abu Taher.
Senior lawyer Md Mansurul Haque Chowdhury told reporters, “Khairul Haque’s name is not mentioned in the FIRs of these two cases. After securing bail in five other cases, he was shown arrested in these two cases. Following the hearing, the High Court issued a rule and granted him six months’ interim bail.”
He further said there were now no legal barriers to the former chief justice’s release.
Senior lawyer Mansurul Haque Chowdhury, Advocate Motahar Hossain Saju, and Advocate Md Jahangir Hossain appeared for Khairul Haque during the hearing.
Earlier, on 8 March, the High Court granted bail to the former chief justice in four cases, including one over the killing of a Jubo Dal activist during the July uprising and allegations of verdict forgery linked to the caretaker government system.
Later, on 28 April, the Appellate Division upheld High Court bail orders granted to Khairul Haque in five other cases, including those related to the killing of a Jubo Dal activist during the July movement, alleged forgery of the caretaker government verdict, and cases filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission.
Khairul Haque was arrested from his Dhanmondi residence on 24 July last year in connection with the murder of Jubo Dal activist Abdul Kaiyum Ahad during the July movement in Jatrabari, Dhaka.
Khairul Haque served as Bangladesh’s 19th chief justice from 27 September 2010 to 17 May 2011.
He later served three terms as chairman of the Bangladesh Law Commission before resigning in August 2024 following the fall of the Awami League government.
