Chattogram City Corporation Mayor Shahadat Hossain has urged India to simplify and speed up the issuance of medical and tourist visas for people travelling from Chattogram.
He made the call during a courtesy meeting with Harish Kumar, India’s newly appointed assistant high commissioner in Chattogram, at the Nagar Bhaban in Tigerpass today (11 May).
During the meeting, the mayor said a large number of people from Chattogram travel to India every year for medical treatment, religious visits and tourism.
He specifically mentioned destinations including Ajmer Sharif Dargah, Hazrat Nizamuddin Dargah and the Taj Mahal as popular sites visited by residents of Chattogram.
“It is important to take necessary measures to increase both the rate and speed of issuing medical and tourist visas for the people of Chattogram,” Shahadat Hossain said.
The mayor also briefed the Indian diplomat on various civic services, ongoing development projects and future plans undertaken by the city corporation.
The meeting also discussed Bangladesh-India relations, expansion of trade and cultural ties between Chattogram and India, and areas of mutual cooperation.
Shahadat Hossain welcomed Harish Kumar to Chattogram and assured him of full cooperation from the city corporation during his tenure.
In response, Harish Kumar praised the mayor’s initiatives for the development of Chattogram and assured that visa-related matters would receive due attention.
Senior officials of the city corporation, including the chief executive officer, were present at the meeting.
At the end of the meeting, the mayor presented a commemorative gift to the assistant high commissioner.
