Four members of a family suffered severe burn injuries in a suspected explosion from a gas line leakage or a refrigerator compressor at Fatullah in Sadar upazila of Narayanganj district at around 6:30am today (11 May).
The injured have been identified as Abdul Kader, 50, and his three sons — Mehedi, 17, and twin brothers Sakib, 16, and Rakib, 16.
Locals said Abdul Kader’s family rented the single-storey house. They rushed to the scene after hearing the sound of a loud explosion and found the doors and windows of the house coming apart.
The victims were rescued in a critical state and taken to the National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery (NIBPS) for treatment.
Shawon Bin Rahman, resident surgeon at the NIBPS emergency department, said, “Abdul Kader suffered burns to 57% of his body, Mehedi suffered 18%, while Sakib was 17% burnt and Rakib 25%.
“Mehedi and Rakib also suffered burns to their respiratory tracts,” the doctor added.
At the time of filing this report, all four remain in a serious condition and are undergoing treatment in hospital, according to the doctor.
Yesterday, five members of another family sustained burn injuries in an explosion caused by a suspected gas leak in the same area.
The incident took place at around 7am in a flat on the western side of the ground floor of an eight-storey building in the Bhuigarh Giridhara area of Narayanganj Sadar upazila.
