A honey collector was seriously injured in a tiger attack while collecting honey in the Sundarbans’ Pairatuni canal area under the Satkhira range yesterday (10 May).
The injured man is Babul Gazi, 48, son of Malek Gazi of Dumuria village in Gabura union under Satkhira’s Shyamnagar upazila, according to the Forest Department.
Fishermen brought him back to the coast this morning before he was admitted to Satkhira Medical College Hospital for treatment.
Forest officials and fellow honey collectors said a group led by boatman Yusuf Gazi had entered the Pairatuni canal area to collect honey.
At around 8am, a tiger suddenly emerged from behind nearby bushes and attacked Babul.
The other honey collectors rushed forward with sticks and began shouting, forcing the tiger to retreat. They later rescued the Babul and returned to the coast.
Malek Gazi, Babul’s father, said, “We had gone together to collect honey. Suddenly, a tiger attacked my son. By the grace of Allah, he is still alive. He has deep wounds in several parts of his body.”
The Forest Department said people entering the Sundarbans are instructed to follow safety guidelines and that authorities are monitoring the injured honey collector’s treatment.
