The High Court today (10 May) granted bail to former chief whip of the parliament ASM Feroz Alam in a case filed over a killing during the July Uprising.
The bench of Justice KM Zahid Sarwar Kajol and Justice Sheikh Abu Taher granted bail to Feroz, said senior lawyer ZI Khan Panna who represented him during the hearing.
Lawyers said the court granted bail after disposing of a rule earlier issued over his bail petition.
Panna said Feroz fell critically ill in prison following his arrest and is currently undergoing treatment under prison supervision.
He added that there is now no legal bar to Feroz’s release following the High Court order.
The lawyer expressed hope that Feroz would soon be released from prison and return to his family to continue treatment under their care.
Earlier, on 23 August, police arrested Feroz from the capital’s Banani area and a court placed him on seven-day remand the next day.
He was placed on three-day fresh remand on 31 August.
According to the case statement, Sohagh Miah, 16, was fatally shot by police on 19 July in front of Farazi Hospital under Bhatara Police Station.
Sohagh’s father Shafayet Hossain on 20 August filed the case against 91, including ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina.
