A New York man has been sentenced to 15 years in prison in the United States for the 2021 murder of a US national in Bangladesh, the United States Department of Justice said.
In a statement, the Justice Department said Ganet Rozario had previously pleaded guilty to one count of foreign murder of a US national.
According to court documents cited by the department, Rozario used a shotgun to kill his uncle, Michael Rozario, in June 2021 in Munshiganj.
Both men were naturalised US citizens originally from Bangladesh and had been involved in a long-running dispute over their family property there.
The Justice Department said on the night of 11 June, 2021, Ganet Rozario was outside the family home smoking near his uncle’s bedroom window when he overheard Michael insulting him from inside the house.
He then allegedly went inside, retrieved a shotgun, returned outside, and fired a single shot through an opaque window shutter after threatening his uncle, fatally wounding him in the abdomen.
Following the killing, Rozario returned to the United States in July 2023 and was later indicted in April 2024, according to the department.
The case was investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s Los Angeles and New York field offices, with assistance from the FBI’s Legal Attaché office in Dhaka and Bangladeshi authorities.
Assistant Attorney General A Tysen Duva and US Attorney Jay Clayton announced the sentencing, the Justice Department said.
