A court today (7 May) set 18 June for filing a probe report in the sensational case lodged over the murders of journalist couple Sagar Sarowar and Meherun Runi, extending the deadline for the submission of the report for the 126th time.
The order was issued by Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Ariful Islam following a hearing in the case, confirmed Rafiqul Islam, sub-inspector of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police prosecution division.
Although the investigation report was scheduled to be submitted on the day, the Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) failed to place the report before the court. Consequently, the magistrate set a new date.
On the night of 11 February 2012, journalist couple Sagar Sarwar, news editor of Maasranga Television, and Meherun Runi, senior reporter of ATN Bangla, were brutally murdered in their rented house in West Rajabazar of the capital.
Later, Runi’s brother Nawsher Alam Roman filed a murder case with Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station.
The case was initially investigated by Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station.
Later, the investigation was handed over to the Detective Branch (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police. The Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) subsequently took charge of the probe.
However, the state later filed a supplementary application was also filed to remove RAB from the investigation.
On 29 September 2024, eminent criminal law expert Advocate Mohammad Shishir Manir was appointed as the lawyer in the case.
Also, on 30 September 2024, the High Court ordered the formation of a high-level task force. They were asked to complete the investigation within six months.
The home ministry was asked to implement this directive. A task force was asked to be formed with experienced investigation officers from various forces.
However, on 22 April 2025, the High Court gave another six months to submit the investigation report.
Earlier on 23 October 2025, the High Court gave the high-level task force committee six months to submit the investigation report into the murder case.
The High Court bench of Justice Fatema Najib and Justice Fatema Anwar issued this order and stated that this was the last time that extension has been given and that the investigation report must be submitted within these six months.
On 24 October 2025, a four-member high-level task force committee was formed with the PBI chief as the convener to investigate the case.
The committee included a representative of the police not below the rank of additional DIG, a representative of the CID, and a representative of the RAB.
