A Dhaka court has set 10 June for the verdict in a case against cricketer Nasir Hossain and his wife Tamima Sultana Tammi over allegations of adultery and related charges.
Dhaka Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Joshita Islam fixed the date today (6 May), after hearing arguments from both sides. The prosecution sought the maximum punishment, while the defence prayed for acquittal, saying the accused are innocent.
According to the case statement, Tamima married Raqib on 26 February 2011, and they have an eight-year-old daughter. Tamima works as a cabin crew member. The complaint says that on 14 February that year, photos of Tamima and cricketer Nasir Hossain’s wedding circulated on social media, which first came to Raqib’s attention. He later learned about the matter through newspapers.
The complaint also states that Nasir allegedly enticed Tamima. The actions of the accused reportedly left Raqib and his daughter severely mentally distressed and caused irreparable damage and defamation.
The case was filed under sections 497, 500 and 34 of the Penal Code, including charges of marrying another person’s wife, adultery and defamation.
The Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) submitted a report on 30 September 2021, naming three people as accused. On 24 January the following year, the court framed charges against Nasir and Tamima, formally starting the trial. However, co-accused Tamima’s mother, Sumi Akter, was discharged from the case.
The court has so far recorded testimony from 10 witnesses.
