Two coal shipments have arrived within a single week for the 1,200 MW Matarbari Ultra Super Critical Coal-Fired Power Project in Maheshkhali upazila of Cox’s Bazar.
One vessel carried 57,100 tonnes of coal, while the other brought 57,800 tonnes.
The latest consignment arrived at Chattogram Port’s outer anchorage yesterday (27 April). Unloading of the 57,800-tonne shipment began at the Matarbari deep-sea port today (28 April).
Earlier, the 57,100-tonne shipment arrived on 23 April, and its unloading was completed yesterday.
HM Nuruzzaman Mia, deputy general manager (commercial) of Coal Power Generation Company Bangladesh Limited (CPGCBL), the plant’s operating agency, confirmed the matter.
He told The Business Standard, “Coal shipments are arriving regularly. Two consignments reached Matarbari within a week. The power plant is currently in full operation.”
According to Power Division data, the implementation of the Matarbari Ultra Super Critical Coal-Fired Power Project began in 2014 for Tk56.693.90 crore. Out of the total expenditure, Tk47,945 crore was secured as a loan from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).
The first unit of the project was commissioned in July 2023, followed by the second in December of the same year.
Currently, Meghna Group and Aditya Birla Group are supplying coal under a one-year agreement to provide 35 lakh tonnes for the Matarbari power plant. These recent shipments are part of that contract, which is scheduled to expire in June this year.
