A 35-year-old man was shot dead by unidentified miscreants near the BMO Brick Field area at Jungle Raozan, a hilly woodland in the north of the Upazila, early this morning (25 April).
The victim, identified as Mohammad Kausaruzzaman Bablu, was a resident of the Dalar Mukh area under ward-9 of Raozan municipality.
According to family and local sources, Bablu was returning home from an invitation at his maternal grandfather’s house at around 3am when a group of armed miscreants, who had been lying in wait, intercepted him. The assailants opened fire at close range before fleeing the scene.
Locals rescued the bullet-hit victim and rushed him to Chittagong Medical College Hospital, but he succumbed to his injuries on the way.
Bablu, a father of two daughters aged 12 and two, worked as a labourer and farmer while also supplying construction materials like bricks and sand locally.
His father, Abul Kalam, stated that while his son was a supporter of the BNP, he was not actively involved in party politics and had no known major enmities.
“We don’t understand why this happened. I demand a fair investigation and exemplary punishment for the killers,” he said.
Sajedul Islam, officer-in-charge (OC) of Raozan Police Station, said an operation is underway to arrest those involved.
Initially, we suspect three to four miscreants were involved in the killing. We have information that the deceased used to work as an informant for various law enforcement agencies. We are investigating the matter with high priority,” the OC added.
The incident marks another violent chapter for Raozan, which has been gripped by instability following the political transition on 5 August 2024.
According to reports, at least 20 people have been killed in the upazila over the last 18 months due to political rivalry, regional dominance, and extortion.
Earlier on 25 February, a Jatiyatabadi Jubo Dal activist named Muhammad Abdul Majid was similarly shot dead in the East Gujra Union.
The recurring violence has sparked deep concerns among local residents regarding the deteriorating law and order situation.
