Residents frustrated with frequent load-shedding vandalised a complaint centre of Power Distribution Division-1 in Brahmanbaria on Tuesday (21 April).
Following the incident, the distribution office filed a written complaint with Sadar Police Station on Wednesday afternoon (22 April), Assistant Engineer Latifur Rahman told The Business Standard.
Latifur said that due to insufficient allocation compared to demand, load-shedding of one hour per cycle is being implemented across different areas.
According to sources, around 73,000 consumers in areas including Datiara, Kautoli, DC Bungalow, Kajipara, Kandipara, Shimrail Kandi, Sherpur, Paittala, Ulchapara, Gokornoghat and Anandabazar under Brahmanbaria Sadar upazila fall under the jurisdiction of Power Distribution Division-1.
During peak hours, electricity demand is around 27 megawatts, while during off-peak hours it rises to about 30MW.
However, only 10 to 11MW are supplied during peak hours and around 11MW during off-peak hours, resulting in increased load-shedding, sources said.
Due to the shortfall, residents across the city experienced load-shedding lasting one to two hours at intervals of one hour on Tuesday night, causing widespread suffering.
In response, a group of angry consumers attacked the complaint centre, damaging its glass panels and doors, duty officer Khalilur Rahman told TBS.
He added that three to four agitated consumers entered the office and carried out the vandalism.
